Leesa Beckman and Oliver the Goose Help Lakeview Elementary School Celebrate Author's Day

DENVILLE, NJ-- If you walked through the Lakeview Elementary School hallways and heard honking coming from the gymnasium, it's because Oliver the Goose was in town. Oliver and his owner, Leesa Beckmann, came to Lakeview School to celebrate Authors Day.

Beckmann is a self published author of children's books. Her pet goose Oliver is the star of many of them. Beckmann visited Lakeview School as part of their One School, One Book program where all the students at Lakeview are learning about animals and what animals bring to human lives. Beckmann brought along Oliver to teach the kids more about his species of goose. The PreK to 2 graders were treated to Oliver, whereas the 3-5 graders will be treated to service dogs.

Beckmann shared with the students on how she first got Oliver, facts about his species, and even let the students pet him as they were saying goodbye.

"Oliver and I like visiting schools in hopes of inspiring the students to read and write, or even draw what they are passionate about. I also feel it's important to socialize Oliver in all types of environments. I know he loves being with people and thrives on people petting him as his reward. How can I tell? He purrs like a kitten every single time!" Beckmann said.

Beckmann was brought in by the Lakeview PTA. The PTA also offered the students a chance to buy Beckmann's books to have autographed to remember their special day with Oliver. Patty Huizing, Lakeview's library media specialist, was very grateful to the PTA for all their help.

"Our PTA is so thoughtful in helping us select authors that each year can share a new perspective to reading and writing with our students from Pre-K to 5th grade," Huizing stated.

Beckmann left Lakeview with happiness. She was so impressed by the students behavior at Lakeview during her visit. The students were grateful for the chance to ask their questions.

"I was so impressed with the students behavior. All the students, from preschool to second grade were attentive and wonderful listeners. I wish I had more time to answe all their questions. The questions that were asked were inquisitive and really took some thought!" Beckmann said happily.

On Jan. 27 and 28, Linda Bozzo will be speaking to the 3-5 graders about service animals to conclude the Lakeview Author's Day celebrations.
