In June, the Morristown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (MAC), announced the recipients of its 2018 scholarships and honoraria, which totaled more than $15,000. This year’s awardees included: Raquia Brewster from Morristown High School; Chikezie Egbuchulam from Morris Hills High School; Jordyn Griffith from Mt. Olive High School; Korla King from Parsippany Hills High School; Kyarra Rawlins from Morristown High School; Bianca Shaw from Morristown High School; Naslaa Suitt from Morristown High School; Tajh Valentine from Morristown Beard High School; and Amira Wilkins from Mt. Olive High School. The competitive application process recognized students for their academic excellence, exemplary leadership, commitment to community service, and compelling essays.

Robert Johnson from Newark Arts High School and Suitt received an honorarium for their participation in two of three youth programs offered by MAC: EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) and the Delta G.E.M.S. (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) Institute. EMBODI is a nine-month program that provides young African-American men in grades six through 12 the opportunity to engage in workshops and group discussions, participate in community service projects, attend field trips, and fellowship with peers in a safe and nurturing environment. Delta G.E.M.S. allows young women in high school to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success, engage in proper goal setting and planning for their futures; and develop into compassionate, caring, and community-minded citizens by actively participating in service learning and community service opportunities.

To date, MAC has awarded more than $180,000 in scholarships to qualifying students who reside or attend high schools in Morris, Sussex, Warren, and Hunterdon Counties or participate in any of MAC’s youth programs.

“For more than 30 years, the members of the Morristown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority have worked tirelessly to support the communities in and surrounding Morristown,” remarked Rev. Marian Sykes Johnson, president and a charter member of the chapter, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017. “Whether we’re co-sponsoring the annual Morristown Community Health Day at Headquarters Plaza, cooking dinner for the residents of the Eric Johnson House, bringing holiday cheer to the children and families who receive services from Homeless Solutions, or socializing with our senior citizens who reside in nursing homes or assisted care facilities, our care and concern for the well-being of all who live, work, and visit Morristown are paramount in all that we do.”

During its 2017-2018 program year, MAC also hosted the Moneywise Empowerment Tour in Whippany, a free daylong program designed to educate members of multicultural and minority households on how to protect their economic resources and increase their net worth. Chapter members also sorted clothing at Dress for Success in Madison and participated in several health walks held throughout Morris County.
