DENVILLE, NJ - Grabbing a mallet as a weapon, a Sewell, NJ man assaulted ans stole the vehicle of someone who gave him a ride away from St. Clare's Hospital in Denville this week, police said.
The man, Michael Romeo, 31, faces charges of carjacking, motor vehicle theft, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and simple assault, according to Denville police.
They said Romeo's victim, who was not identified, drove Romeo from St. Clare's Hospital to Diamond Spring Road. As he got out of the car, Romeo "grabbed a mallet from the back seat and told the victim to get out of the car," said police. "A struggle ensued and Romeo was able to steal the victim's car."
Police said they determined Romeo was likely in the Philadelphia area, so detectives from the Denville Police Department and the Morris County Prosecutor's Office went to the city. "Ultimately, detectives located the victim's car as well as Romeo," police said.
They said Romeo was arrested by Philadelphia police and is awaiting extradition to New Jersey.
