ROCKAWAY, NJ – With both teams possessing undefeated records for the season, Morris Knolls’ 2-1 loss at home to West Morris on Saturday, Sept. 15, came as a wakeup call to last year’s county champions. Evenly matched during the first period with a 1-1 tie, West Morris scored its second and winning goal in the second period of the game.
Morris Knolls junior Rebecca Racine scored the first goal of the game, assisted by junior Madison Palma. Several minutes later, West Morris senior Leanne Engemann answered with the tying goal, assisted by junior Kristine Hauser. West Morris senior Emily Leyson clenched the game with the team's second goal more than halfway through the second period. Leyson was assisted by senior Anise Mamary.
A performance of near equals, West Morris had 10 shots on goal, six saves and three corner kicks. While Morris Knolls had six shots on goal, 10 saves and three corner kicks.
West Morris Coach Ken Rossi aptly summed up the game. “I thought it was a fantastic game on both sides up and down. If you’re into watching soccer at the high school level, this was the game to come to. The kids played with incredible heart on both sides -- a lot of really [physically] talented … kids -- a lot of athletically talented kids -- a lot of technically talented kids. We anticipated it being this kind of game.”
The 2-1 Golden Eagles travel to Roxbury on Thursday, Sept. 20. The game starts at 4 p.m.
