Morristown Medical Center’s National Cancer Survivors Day Celebration Features Suzzanne Douglas as Keynote Speaker and Performer

The Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Morristown Medical Center celebrates its 20th Anniversary at its National Cancer Survivors Day event, Sunday, June 10 from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm.  The event is open to Carol G. Simon Cancer Center cancer survivors and their caregivers.

Twenty years ago, the doors opened to Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, a legacy of William E. Simon and his wife, Carol, longtime volunteers at Morristown Medical Center.  Today, over 3,000 new cancer patients are diagnosed or treated each year at the center, with annual outpatient visits totaling 113,000.  The center has grown through the recruitment of top specialists and perpetually expanding research and trials.  The center is also home to the Aresty Radiation Therapy Center, the Leonard B. Kahn Head and Neck Cancer Institute and Atlantic HPV Center, the Carol W. and Julius A. Rippel Breast Center, and a Women’s Cancer Center. 

For this anniversary celebration, keynote speaker Suzzanne Douglas will share her cancer story and perform with her jazz trio.   Douglas is an award-winning actress whose work on stage and in film and television spans four decades. In the theatre Douglas has performed on Broadway, starring opposite Sting in The Three Penny Opera as well as The Tap Dance Kid and It’s a Grand Night for Singing. Douglas is widely known for her starring role in the long-running Warner Brothers show, The Parent ‘Hood. She has appeared in such highly-acclaimed shows as Bull, Bones, The Good Wife, Law and Order – Criminal IntentNYPD Blue, Touched by an Angel, I’ll Fly Away, the ABC remake of the classic film Sounder (Black Reel Award) and Whitney for Lifetime.

In film Ms. Douglas’ work can be seen in How Stella Got Her Groove Back (Black Oscar), Jason’s Lyric, Tap (NAACP Image Award), Jason’s Lyric, The Inkwell, Changing the Game (Cannes Film Festival), School of Rock, Chain of Desire, Happy Yummy Chicken, for which she wrote the title song, and the film Black N’ Blue, an independent film which addresses the Black Lives Matter Movement.

As a producer, Douglas won the award for Best Short film at the Hollywood Black Film Festival Awards for The Last Weekend. She also co-produced Theresa Rebeck’s Love on the Rocks. Douglas sings regularly with her jazz trio, performing re-imagined jazz standards as well as her original compositions. She has traveled the United States and internationally performing with many renowned musicians including Jon Faddis, Nate Adderley, Don Braden, T.S. Monk, Helen Sung, Stanley Turrentine and Gene Harris.
