OCD New Jersey, an Affiliate of the International Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Foundation, will host its 18th Annual Conference on Sunday, March 4, at The Westwood in Garwood.

Dr. Martin Franklin will present, “From the Cradle to the Grave: Nuances in CBT Delivery Across the Developmental Spectrum.” This program is designed for both professionals and non-professionals and has been approved for four continuing education credits. Registration fees include a continental breakfast and a buffet lunch. Registration is now open at www.ocdnj.org.

During the interactive, multimedia presentation, Dr. Franklin will discuss that cognitive behavioral therapy’s effectiveness in treating OCD is well established in individuals across the developmental spectrum and is most powerful when delivered in a developmentally sensitive way. This presentation will focus on the importance of adjusting treatment to fit various moments in the life span.

Practitioners and members of the OCD community alike, are encouraged to consider the many differences between the treatment of individuals of varied ages, such as a child just starting to recognize intrusive thoughts and a 70-year-old who has had a lifelong struggle with OCD. CBT can be made most effective and meaningful when these differences are brought to light within the therapeutic context. Dr. Martin Franklin is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, and Director of the Child and Adolescent OCD, Tic, Trich, and Anxiety Group (COTTAGe) in the Department of Psychiatry. He has devoted his career to the study of anxiety and body-focused repetitive behaviors (such as chronic tic disorders and trichotillomania, TTM) in children and adults.

The second part of the program, entitled, “Living with OCD” will consist of a panel of those affected by OCD, who will each briefly speak about their experience. This will be followed by a question and answer session. The panel will be moderated by Allen H. Weg, EdD, President of OCD New Jersey. Dr. Weg is a New Jersey licensed psychologist and Founder and Executive Director of Stress and Anxiety Services of New Jersey, LLC. He and his associates specialize in the cognitive behavioral treatment of anxiety disorders and OCD-related spectrum disorders for children, adolescents, and adults.

OCD New Jersey is committed to educating the community about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), offering support to sufferers and their families and supporting research. OCD New Jersey hosts free quarterly meetings that feature OCD experts as the guest speakers. For more information, go to www.ocdnj.org.
