NEW JERSEY -- The founders of John’s Crazy Socks recently appeared on One-on-One with Steve Adubato to discuss their company and its incredible success. Founded in 2016, John’s Crazy Socks sells more than 1,900 varieties of socks and also is driven by a social mission: to demonstrate to the world what people with disabilities can do.

John’s Crazy Socks was founded by the father and son team of Mark X. Cronin and John Cronin. John is a young man with Down Syndrome and is the face of the company. The store has had great success, shipping more than 42,000 orders last year, but is organized as a social enterprise. “What that means,” said Mark Cronin, “is that we have a twin mission--a social mission and a business mission. They are indivisible and they feed off of each other.”

Many of the socks found on their site, www.johnscrazysocks.com, are “Awareness” socks, crafted around specific causes, like Breast Cancer or Autism, and a portion of each sale goes directly to their charity partners. Five percent of company earnings are donated to the Special Olympics. The company also hires people with special needs and differing abilities, which has proven to be a good business decision as well as philanthropic.

“They show up on time, they want to work, they’re enthusiastic, they’re focused, they’re energized,” Mark Cronin said. "Retention is sky-high, morale is sky-high, productivity is high.” Of the 33 jobs at the company, 15 have been filled by people with differing abilities.

John’s Crazy Socks is determined to be a great sock store, but their social mission goes hand-in-hand with their success. “We want to show the world what can happen when you give somebody a chance, specifically, people with intellectual disabilities,” Mark Cronin said. “Every time people see John on a show like this, it starts to change the perception of what somebody with a disability can do.”
