NEW JERSEY – The three-part storm system has evolved exactly as models have predicted. Rain has over swept most of the central and southern New Jersey areas, with freezing rain and snow now covering all areas north of I-80.

Any areas other than far northwest New Jersey will see a changeover to all rain for the remainder of Sunday. The areas at highest elevations and the northwest part of the state will likely see all ice and snow, with accumulations today in that area of one to three inches likely.

Phase two will be occurring tonight, with rain and wind becoming more intense, and then likely to end for a few hours late Sunday night into Monday early morning as the two low pressure systems will be merging off the coast near Atlantic City. As the storms intensify, the winds will increase, and the colder air will spread over the entire state north of I-195.

This will lead to Phase three, which will see snow steadily developing in the early morning. The farther north and west of the New Jersey Turnpike you live, will determine how much snow will accumulate.

For now, we continue to expect the following accumulations and forecast for the TAPinto areas:

South of I-195 and the extreme coastal areas:  A mostly rain event will continue throughout Sunday, with a wintry mix possible on Monday. Little to no accumulation is expected.

Between I-195 and I-80: Snow, sleet, and freezing rain Sunday afternoon, then rain Sunday night, then a break Sunday night. Significant snow on Monday morning and afternoon. Expect a coating to an inch in southern areas (Trenton and South Brunswick), one to three inches in Middlesex and south Somerset counties, and three to six inches north of I-78.

North of I-80 and areas north and west (Sparta): Snow, then freezing rain, then much more snow is possible depending on storm location. It is likely this region will see at least one to three inches of snow on Sunday into Monday, and possibly six inches or more in far northwestern New Jersey.

More updates will be provided Sunday night and Monday. Please check your local TAPInto sites for school delays, closings and business interruptions as this storm intensifies.
