The Rotary Club of the Rockaways is hosting a Mother’s Day Wine Tasting on Saturday, May 11, with proceeds supporting two other nonprofits: Denville-based Vision Loss Alliance of New Jersey, and Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey.

The fun-filled event at Lake Telemark Community Club in Rockaway Township will feature select wines and food from ShopRite’s Sunrise Cellars and Kitchens, a 50/50 drawing, and door prizes. Tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door. Designated drivers can attend for $25.

Vision Loss Alliance of New Jersey and Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey offer crucial support to people facing challenges after life-changing experiences, said Susan Simon-Spada, Rotary club vice president and fundraising chair.

“Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey helps people who served our country and are in need,” Simon-Spada said. “Vision loss is a serious disability, and Vision Loss Alliance is helping people learn to adapt and enjoy independent lives.”

Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey is an entirely volunteer nonprofit dedicated to helping men and women who served in the U.S. military overcome obstacles in their return to civilian life. The 10-year old nonprofit helps veterans access medical services, housing, jobs and legal assistance.

“It’s tremendous to get the Rotary’s support,” said Welcome Home Vets founder George Hanley, who spoke at the club’s March 27 meeting. “Every nickel we get goes directly to veterans,” he said. “For some, even $500 makes a world of difference.” Hanley told the Rotarians about a New Jersey bodega owner who enlisted in the U.S. Army after 9/11. He returned from his tour in Iraq facing eviction. Hanley organized a fundraiser so the veteran could keep his business going.

In its 75th year, Vision Loss Alliance of New Jersey empowers individuals who are blind or low vision, providing support, education, skills training, assistive technology and employment opportunities for people of all ages. “We are grateful to the Rotary Club of the Rockaways for recognizing our important work in the community,” Vision Loss Alliance Executive Director Kris Marino said.

Tickets can be purchased online at, or in person at Nickel Artistic Services, 39 Route 46 in Rockaway. Call 973-627-0390 or 973-602-3896 for more information.
