MADISON, NJ – St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center is flying 78 dogs into Morristown Municipal Airport on Tuesday night as part of a Hurricane Harvey relief effort.

Correction: The article previously stated that at least 100 dogs would land Tuesday afternoon in Morristown. St. Hubert's has since released an updated number of 78 canines with an arrival time of 9:30 p.m.

After landing in Morristown at 9:30 p.m.,, the dogs will visit the St. Hubert’s Madison campus where they can eat, sleep and exercise until they are transferred and distributed between at least a dozen partner shelters throughout the Northeast.

“Our hearts are with the people and animals of Texas, and we and our partners will continue to help in the days, weeks and months to come,” said Heather Cammisa, president and CEO of St. Hubert’s.

Cammisa founded the WayStation program, a coordination of 58 animal welfare organizations in the eastern U.S. In the past year this effort has helped nearly 4,000 canines, she said in a statement.

Tuesday’s canine transport is the first animal flight to the Northeast out of areas devastated by Hurricane Harvey, and is part of St. Hubert’s Sister Shelter WayStation program.

Organized by the Humane Society of the United States with support from Wings of Rescue, the airlift will bring dogs from the San Antonio Animal Care and Control, which is now assisting the Houston region with hurricane relief.

“These pets are incredibly lucky to get a second chance through St. Hubert’s and their WayStation partners,” Kim Alboum, Shelter Outreach and Policy Engagement Director at the Humane Society said in a statement. “We could not do this life-saving work without our placement partners and our rescue partners on the ground.”

St. Hubert’s is part of a national network of designated Emergency Placement Partners and the Humane Society, and responds to emergencies around the country to accept displaced animals or deploy experienced staff.

The welfare center has also assisted in the rescue of about 100 North Carolina dogs and cats displaced by Hurricane Matthew and 133 more canines left without homes following the 2016 California wildfires.

Sister shelters scheduled to accept dogs include:

  • Animal Alliance in Belle Mead, NJ
  • Animal Welfare Association in Voorhees, NJ
  • Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester, PA
  • Delaware Humane Association in Wilmington, DE
  • Father John’s Animal House in Lafayette, NJ
  • Humane Society for Greater Nashua in Nashua, NH
  • Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown, NJ
  • Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover, NJ
  • New Hampshire SPCA in Stratham, NH
  • Somerset County Animal Shelter in Bridgewater, NJ
