Every Thursday morning at 9:00 am, Ms. Melanie and Ms. Christine of the Denville Public Library, and a group of children ages 6 months to 10 yrs old show up at the Denville Community Gardens ready to work! This year, The Denville Public Library's FOL sponsored the Children's Library program: Book Worms Garden program. We were able to get new gardening equipment and organic seeds and soil with the funds they gave us.
Our Book Worms program started during Spring Break inside with seeds and seed starting planters. We learned how seeds can grow into plants that we can eat. This was a new experience for many of the patrons. After the plants grew kids and adults planted them in our Friends of The Library Community Garden.
From June into August our Book Worms met in our garden to help take care of our plants by weeding and watering the plants weekly. We learned about honey bees, worms and how plants grow. On our program's final day every family picked their own basil, green beans, beets, carrots, Swiss chard, cucumbers, lettuce, green onions, potatoes, tomatoes and zucchini to take home. The left over vegetables that are still growing will be donated to local charities.
