April is Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Awareness Month, a national campaign to increase awareness about education, treatment, and prevention of STDs.

STDs are common, affecting 1 in 2 sexually active people during their lifetime - and most people don't know they are infected.  The rate of STDs is increasing, with a 68% increase in bacterial sexually transmitted diseases reported in Morris county between 2009 and 2015 (New Jersey Department of Health, Division of HIV, STD, and TB Services.  2016.  2015 Comprehensive STD by County.  http://www.nj.gov/health/hivstdtb/stds/stats.shtml).

Almost all STDs, including HIV, are treatable and many are curable.  The sooner that you know your status through simple tests, the sooner you can get treated and the better you can avoid serious health problems that can result from untreated STDs.

Planned Parenthood of Northern, Central and Southern New Jersey (PPNCN) is proud to celebrate Get Yourself Tested (GYT) Month , an initiative to encourage people to get tested for STDs.

STD prevention is a core part of Planned Parenthood's health care services and education efforts.  PPNCSNJ knows that access to safer sex - including tools, testing and treatment and education about STDs are the best ways to ensure that people of all ages stay healthy and safe.  Many health centers offer free or low-cost tests and treatments.  You can find your nearest testing center at PlannedParenthood.org.

Join us this month as we bring awareness to the GYT Month.
