Jersey Shore Outdoors: LBI Fishing Update by Jim Hutchinson Sr.

LONG BEACH ISLAND -- I received a crabbing report from Jeremy Muermann, one of our local crabbers. We are coming up on the first big shed of the year for blue claw crabs. Jeremy tells me actual crabbing will slow a little until after the shed because the big males will be busy mating and carrying out soft shells during this time period. “Wings over New Jersey” columnist Jack Elliott Memorialized Sunday

My walk to high school in Summit each day took me past a large brick compound called the New England Village Garden Apartments.  The buildings were rectangular and, except for white Colonial door mantels, they were otherwise nondescript.

The village was filled with older people, who wanted to stay in town after unloading their homes. Each day, kids like me would walk by, oblivious to the ...

Pinata cakes (aka surprise cakes) are “the” birthday party dessert now. The layer cakes are filled with candy, so when you cut into them — surprise! — M&Ms or Skittles or sprinkles or whatever spills out. Being the awesome mom that I am, I decided to take a shot at making one for a particular 9-year-old’s birthday.

Spoiler alert: She loved it.
