DENVILLE, NJ -- Thousands from and near Denville strolled through the municipality’s downtown area for its annual Sidewalk Sale Days, July 25 – 27. The shopping extravaganza kicked off with a block party on Thursday organized by the Downtown Denville Business Improvement District (BID).
While the mission of the Downtown Denville BID is to promote downtown businesses and improvements, the BID also holds community events like the block party to attract foot traffic to the area.
“Different kinds of events bring in new people,” said Colleen Holland, owner of California Beach Hut on Broadway.
“Sidewalk sales have been going on forever, but this is definitely bringing in a different crowd. And the way Downtown Denville is promoting this, they are doing a great job. We even got more customers this year than the last.”
For three consecutive days, dozens of local vendors set up tables and displays, primarily along Broadway, and sold antiques, clothes, shoes, jewelry, children’s toys, swimsuits, furniture and bicycles to a steady stream of customers.
“This has been wonderful for all of downtown,” said Kelly Daab, co-owner of Butter & Velvet Home and Design, which moved to Broadway in September 2018.
“This is our time to sell merchandise on the street. We just love the excitement and all the new people we get to meet.”
While the sidewalk sales received top billing, the block party also featured other fun activities for shoppers such as discounts at local restaurants, face painting for children, a beer garden for adults, raffle prizes, hula dancing, photo booths and musical performances by the Morris Music Men as well as Mr. Lovejoy rock band.
“This is a super event that brings out the community and a fantastic kick-off to our merchandise sidewalk sales,” said Denville Councilman John Murphy.
“We have wonderful weather, and it’s great to see downtown busy. We have more events for downtown Denville that keep getting bigger and bigger.”
Other Downtown Denville BID events include Dine Out Denville, September 15 – 19; an art walk, September 26; and Pink Witches Night Out, October 17. For more information about Downtown Denville BID and its upcoming events, visit https://downtowndenville.com.
