DENVILLE, NJ – The school district of Denville Township has much to be proud of. Recently, the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) awarded Damaris Gurowsky, school business administrator of the Denville Board of Education, the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting (COE).

“The COE’s mission is to promote and recognize excellence in financial reporting, specifically through a district’s [Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR)],” said ASBO International Executive Director David Lewis, in a recent press release.

“The CAFR informs stakeholders about the financial and economic state of the district, making it an important communications tool for building trust and engaging with the school community.”

Gurowsky expressed similar sentiments.

“This COE Award is a shining example of that fiscal responsibility, and we are all very proud to be recognized for our efforts and accomplishments,” said Gurowsky.

“With [Superintendent] Steve’s guidance and leadership, he has insisted on professional and responsible performance of the administrators and staff, and this is only one example of that leadership. I am extremely happy for, and proud of, our staff and glad that this will reflect well on their work ethics, hard work and efforts to maintain Denville School District as a premier public school system in the state.”

Gurowsky graduated from a Catholic high school in Manhattan and has an associate’s degree from Berkley College. She earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Baruch College and then a master’s degree in accounting from Phoenix University in 2012. During several years as an accountant for a public accounting firm, Gurowsky worked with private, corporate and public clients on tax and financial matters. She also participated in annual audits for several school districts, which became her entrée into the public school system.

Gurowsky began to work with the Denville’s school district in 2015. She and her family have been residents of Denville since 2004.

“I’ve had the pleasure and good fortune of working with our superintendent, Dr. Steve Forte, and an excellent support staff and administration,” said Gurowsky.

“Under Steve’s leadership, the BOE has been fiscally conservative with capital expenditures, while also maintaining and constantly improving our faculty, facilities and programs, all in the best interest of our students.”

And now, with the COE award in hand, Gurowsky cannot wait for what this honor will bring to the schools of Lakeview, Riverview and Valleyview as well as the whole township community.

“Being recognized by the Association of School Business Officials International is obviously a tremendous reflection of the district’s leadership, discipline and financial responsibility,” said Gurowsky.

“Being recognized this way only enhances the credentials and reputation of Denville Public Schools, which in turn is a great reflection on the township itself and the side effects of being a desirable place to live, along with increased property values that accrue from that reputation. Personally, I’m certainly very proud of the award and recognition, but it is a great accomplishment for my support staff, the Denville BOE and township residents as well. It demonstrates the care and concern we have for our students, residents and faculty, and the importance of being fiscally responsible in these challenging times.”

The COE is sponsored by ASBO International Strategic Partner American Fidelity.
