JERSEY CITY, NJ -- Susan G. Komen North Jersey’s annual 5K is in the books as hundreds of individuals’ cheery spirits shined through the soggy morning.

The 12th Annual Race for the Cure at Liberty State Park held yesterday morning, May 5, included a 5K Timed Race and Fun Run.

Participants weighed-in as they waited for results and awards.

“This is a great race,” Holly Basile of Wall said. “I’ve participated five-plus times. It’s for a great cause, so we all love to come and support our friends and family.”

“Even though it’s raining, it’s a great run with lots of inspirational men and women,” Erica Shello of South Plainfield said. “I’m proud to be a part of it.”

“This is all about us being here, supporting each other,” cancer survivor Carrie Basham of Mount Arlington said. “The rain is not stopping us.”

The money raised at the event will fund life-saving breast health and breast cancer programs in nine North Jersey counties, as well as breakthrough national research programs searching for the causes and cures to put an end to breast cancer.

While this year’s Race was expected to attract nearly 2,500 people from across the tri-state region, including hundreds of survivors, the damp weather most assuredly kept the attendance lower than expected.

The photo tent, sponsored by TAPinto.net and Eloquent Studios of Chester, N.J., was busy as runners and families piled in for photos to commemorate the event. Hard copies of the photos were printed on the spot and TAPinto.net featured Facebook posts of the race day photos.

Kelly E. Nagle, executive director of Komen North Jersey, praised the runners and participants at the finish line, thanking them for coming out, even when the day was uncomfortable.

“It’s just rain, those with cancer have weathered so much more,” she said.
