DENVILLE, NJ – Laura Wagner and Linda Rodriguez, co-chairs of the Vamp Up Vets Field Committee, accepted $18,000 in donations from three recreational sports groups during the Denville Township Council meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Hub Soccer and Renegades Lacrosse gave $5,000 each, and Denville Blue Angels contributed $8,000. Earlier this year, Morris Rugby donated $5,000 and was the first sports organization to give to the cause.
The Vamp Up Vets Field Committee is raising funds to install new ADA-compliant bleachers, a digital scoreboard and a press box with a sound system at Denville’s only turf field located at Veterans Memorial Park on Zeek Road. The field is used for football, cheerleading, rugby, lacrosse and soccer. To date, the committee has raised $63,000 of the $125,000 needed to complete the project.
In addition to the donations received from the local sports organizations, the committee’s fundraising efforts include proceeds from a food truck festival in October and sales of the 2019 Denville First Responders Calendar as well as Honor a Vet plaques. The calendar, which costs $20, features members of the Denville Police Department, Denville Volunteer Fire Department, Denville Office of Emergency Management/CERT and the Denville Department of Public Works, along with several animals that are available for adoption at the Denville Animal Shelter.
The Honor a Vet plaques cost $100 each and can be customized to include the engraved name, rank, military branch and emblem, and service dates of the honored veteran. The plaque is made of colored acrylic with a protective clear acrylic coating. Ultimately, all plaques will be mounted on the wooden fence that lines the driveway of Veterans Memorial Park. According to Wagner, samples will be available for viewing at Denville Town Hall in January.
