DENVILLE, NJ -- The Denville Cemetery (9 Savage Road) will join more than 2,400 other cemeteries nationwide to honor America's veterans on National Wreaths Across America Day, Sat Dec 19. The ceremony will begin at noon.
Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit organization that grew into a nationwide tradition after Morrill Worcester's wreath company in Harrington, Maine, used its surplus supply to honor veterans' service and sacrifice by placing the wreaths at their graves at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992. After a photo of the wreaths drew national attention in 2005, the annual wreath-laying tradition expanded to locations around the U.S. and abroad.
Volunteers lay wreaths at veterans' graves every year and pronounce the name of each veteran at more than 2,400 locations across the country. Last year, volunteers placed 2.2 million wreaths on the headstones of veterans.
National Wreaths Across America Day is a free community event open to all.
(In anticipation of the snowstorm, the actual laying of the wreaths at the Denville Cemetery occurred Wed Dec 16, according to the organization's website. The ceremony still will take place on Sat Dec 19 at 12 p.m.)
