MORRISTOWN, NJ - A cart full of beautifully hand-crafted caps and pillows were donated Thursday morning, Sept. 19, to the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Morristown Medical Center. The pillows and caps, a generous donation from the Montville Women’s Club, aims to provide comfort and support to the women receiving treatment for breast cancer.

Alexandria Sarra, vice president and chair of the Montville Women’s Club and her team of volunteers donated the first batch of 25 pillows.

“We will make and donate a total of 100 pillows,” said Sarra. “These pillows and hats provide a little comfort for the women who are going through treatment.”

Dr. Dana Holwitt, a breast cancer surgeon at Atlantic Health, who is herself a breast cancer survivor, knows the importance of the hats and pillows during treatment.

“The pillows provide comfort from drains and the caps keep people warm as well as maintaining a little style when going through treatment”, said Dr. Holwitt. “The donation that the Montville Women’s Club made today is indescribably important for women going through breast cancer who don’t have the funds to purchase the necessary caps”.

“This donation has no value, its priceless,” she said.

This is the 15th year that the Montville Women’s Club has crafted the pillows and hats for the cancer center. Sarra chose this project for her group after the state women’s organization sent out a list of projects for the group to choose from. When asked why they chose this particular project, Sarra said “first of all we are a women’s club and if we can do something to help these women, we will,”

The Monvtille Women’s Club is part of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs and consists of 23 members. Not all of the members participate in this project. The volunteers and members who cut, sew, assemble and then deliver the hand-made pillows and hats are Sarra, Mary Ann Henry, Janet Quentz and Joyti Godhani.

“We are proud of our project and as long as I’m living and breathing, we will continue it,” said Sarra.

The doctors and staff are very appreciative and thankful to receive this ongoing donation for their patients.

"I have the privilege of journeying with patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and receive their treatment at Morristown Medical Center from the time of diagnosis to completion of their treatment," said Karen DeRenzi Oncology Breast Nurse Navigator at Carol G. Simon Cancer, Morristown Medical Center. "It’s amazing how what appears to be “just a small pillow” can become one of the greatest comforts a patient has post-surgery and recovery."

"We are blessed with wonderful volunteers who donate their time, skills, talents and kindness to our patients. The donations we receive are well utilized and appreciated by our patients," continued DeRenzi. "I can say with extreme certainty that the greatest thing that our patients receive is the feeling that there are so many strangers that really care about them and their experience during their cancer treatment."

In addition to providing comfort pillows and caps to breast cancer patients, the Montville Women's Club also sends care packages to U.S. soldiers, conducts annual blood drives, provides high school scholarships, collects for charitable causes and and organizes undraisers for local efforts.
