DENVILLE, NJ -- Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, who represents New Jersey's 11th District, which includes Denville, stopped by Denville's National Night Out event held at Riverview Elementary School on Dec. 6.

Sherrill believes it would be "a layup" if the U.S. Senate voted on legislation that would require universal background checks for the purchase of guns.

"The first bill I co-sponsored when I got the House of Representatives was H.R. 8," Sherrill said. "It's universal background checks for gun purchases with carve-outs for hunters and personal protection. I am really hoping the Senate takes up this bill. It just seems like a layup. Over 97 percent of Americans agree with universal background checks."
