DENVILLE, NJ -- The Denville Township Council unanimously voted to approve the adoption of the annual budget of the Downtown Denville Business Improvement District (BID) at its monthly meeting on July 14. The governing body had previously approved its introduction in early June.

Downtown Denville BID is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to promote the local stores and shops in the township’s downtown, particularly around the Broadway area. The organization also organizes community events, such as sidewalk sales, cancer rallies and holiday parades, to attract foot traffic. Recently, Downtown Denville BID held its second “Denville After Dark” event, featuring music concerts, outside dining and classic car displays.

Downtown Denville BID has its own board of directors and is required to submit its annual budget to the township council for approval. The budget results in an added tax assessment for the property owners located within Broadway and its surrounding area.

This year, the budget for Downtown Denville BID amounts to $218,000, with an additional $10,000 from the township if the organization achieves certain goals, such as its fundraising initiative, business recruitment initiative and regular budget reviews.

Downtown Denville BID recently revised its budget to focus more on marketing and bringing customers back to the area when it is appropriate and safe to do so during the COVID-19 crisis.

“These are very difficult times for retailers and restaurants across the country,” said Business Administrator Steve Ward.

“The township wants to do whatever we can to assist to ensure our Downtown remains vibrant once we get through this difficult chapter related to the pandemic.”

Mayor Thomas Andes agreed.

“It is our pleasure to help our Business Improvement District, Downtown Denville, especially during these difficult times caused by COVID-19,” said Andes.

“Our business community has always been very supportive of Denville community projects, organizations and events, and we all know as our Downtown goes so does all of our property values.”
