DENVILLE, NJ -- Denville Business Administrator Steve Ward shared details on the acquisition of a 5.43-acre parcel of land in his report to the members of the Denville Township Council at their meeting on Tue, Dec 3.

“The county is going to provide us with $159,000 toward the purchase of a five-acre parcel of property on the corner of Mary Avenue and Diamond Spring Road,” said Ward.

“The property is assessed and demanded from the owners higher than that. We knew all along there would have to be a local contribution of probably 20 to 50 percent. We have not come to a final number as we are still in negotiations with the property owner.”

The land is adjacent to Muriel Hepner Park and would be used for recreational activities, such as walking and hiking.

Also in his report, Ward mentioned that the township will be receiving $150,000 from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for the resurfacing of Franklin Road.

“We’ve received $150,000 for Phase Five of the Franklin Road resurfacing project, which will be the final phase,” said Ward.

“During the past six-year period, we’ve paved almost a three-mile stretch of Franklin Road from one end to the other with grant funding.”

Ward also discussed the impact of the snowstorm that hit the township last weekend. Many township events, such as the annual Holiday Parade, were postponed or canceled.

“It was a really difficult couple of days,” said Ward.

“It was a long storm and [members of the Department of Public Works] were in from 11:30 a.m. on Sunday to 11 p.m. on Sunday, back in at 5 a.m yesterday [Monday], and most of them worked through noontime today [Tuesday]. There were a lot of trees down in the south side of town. I guess there were probably 100 trees that were down, partially or fully, on the south side of Route 10.”

A few township roads were closed during that time, but DPW worked to clear the area of all downed trees. Roads reopened on Dec 3.
