ROXBURY, NJ — The new Shops at Ledgewood Commons shopping center will be home to a Burlington store, the site developer confirmed on Wed., Sept. 9.
Based in New Jersey, Burlington Stores - formerly Burlington Coat Factory - operates 739 stores in 45 states and Puerto Rico, according to its website.
The Burlington store in The Shops at Ledgewood Commons will be a competitor to the new mall's main anchor retailer - a new Walmart Supercenter - but more directly to its existing Marshall's store, which offers the same type of discounted, name-brand items.
Burlington says its stores "offer an extensive selection of in-season, fashion-focused merchandise at up to 60 percent off other retailers' prices, including women’s ready-to-wear apparel, menswear, youth apparel, baby, beauty, footwear, accessories, home, toys, gifts and coats."
The Burlington store also would find competition in The Shops at Ledgewood Commons from a number of other retailers that have agreed to open including DSW, which sells shoes and fashion accessories; ULTA Beauty, which carries cosmetics, skincare, haircare, bath and beauty products; and Men's Wearhouse.
Book Store 'Abandoned' Loyal Customers
In mentioning the addition of Burlington Stores to the mix on Tuesday, Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo had some harsh words for Barnes and Noble related to the bookseller's unexpected announcement last month that it will not be a part of the upgraded mall.
"On a sad note, Barnes and Noble booksellers surprised everyone and pulled out of the shopping center suddenly two weeks ago without any advance warning to the township or developers," the mayor said at Tuesday's meeting of the Roxbury Mayor and Council. He suggested the company could have been more polite about its withdrawal from the township.
"Apparently struggling and feeling financial pressure nationally, the book store chose to abandon its loyal Roxbury patrons after 27 years by quietly closing up and leaving without explanation or thanks for the many years it prospered in Roxbury," DeFillippo said. "The developers have assured us that the new shopping center continues to move forward on schedule as planned."
Another entity that was supposed to occupy space in the 470,000-square-foot shopping center, but is not, is 24-Hour Fitness, according to Advance Realty Investors.
The company said a number of restaurants previously announced as tenants remain committed to stay or to open new venues at the site: Wendy's, Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Starbucks, Panda Express Chinese Kitchen, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Red Lobster.
Also staying on site will be Lemon Tree Salon, formerly Cutting Crew, now occupying the building that once served as a Pizza Hut.
