What’s that over there in the citrus section of the supermarket? Rounder than a lemon, lighter in color than an orange — it’s a Meyer lemon!

Meyer lemons are sweeter than ordinary lemons, with a rich, spicy fragrance. The citrus fruit is available this time of year and definitely worth picking up.

The juice of a Meyer lemon is less acidic than an ordinary lemon, so they’re not perfect for every recipe. When you want something with more acid, stick to regular lemons. Otherwise, don't be afraid to swap in Meyer lemons for fabulous flavor in all kinds of foods.

Here are five ways to brighten your winter cooking with these unique fruits:

Squeeze Meyer lemon juice over chicken or fish, such as salmon or shrimp.

Grate the zest and sprinkle over roasted vegetables, pasta or risotto.

Swap out Meyer lemon zest for regular lemon zest in baking.

Save the peel from a Meyer lemon and place in a pitcher of water. Let stand in the fridge at least an hour for a refreshing drink.

Make Meyer lemon margaritas: In liquid measuring cup, stir together 1 part Meyer lemon juice, one part triple sec and one part tequila. Wet the rims of your glasses and dip in sugar for a sweet drink, or chlie lime salt for a kick before adding ice and pouring in the mixture.
