DENVILLE, NJ – The Denville Police Department announced the implementation of the Special Needs Registry to help first responders identify and assist individuals who may be challenged with developmental disabilities such as autism, dementia, Down Syndrome or any other identified special need(s). According to the department, the new program will be helpful in identifying and safely returning anyone with special needs who has wandered from his or her home or loved ones.

The registry “creates a database of available to our officers and other first responders that will enable them to quickly identify those within our community who have special needs and, more importantly, to help them understand how to best interact with the individuals…to achieve a safe and effective outcome of any interaction,” stated department officials in a public information release dated April 5.

All persons with special needs who live, work or attend school in Denville are eligible to register for the program. To obtain an application, visit www.denvillepolice.org, or stop by police headquarters (1 St. Mary’s Place) to pick up a hard copy. Questions can be directed to Sgt. The program is noncompulsory, and all information provided in the application will be kept confidential.
