MORRISTOWN, NJ -- Dozens of people gathered on the Morristown Green on July 14 to celebrate differences during the second annual Diversity Day.

Muhammed Ali Chaudry, president of the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge, spoke about the current circumstances we live in and the divisiveness, hatred and bigotry that people are experiencing.

Chaudry challenged the audience by asking, “What can be done to make a difference in the way people are being treated with regards to their differences?”

Part of the pledge he asked everyone to repeat included, "While interacting with members of my own faith or ethnic, or gender community, or with others, if I hear hateful comments from anyone about members of any other community, I pledge, to stand up for the other and speak up to challenge bigotry in any form."

In addition to speakers, there were many different tables set up for people to gather information.

“This is a great community event for people to come together,” said Laura Graham, member of Dover-Randolph Quaker Meeting. “The Quaker belief is that there is a light inside everyone regardless of their background.”

Attendees were told to know the importance of history and then reflect on their own lives. Keith Boden, past president of the Morris County NAACP discussed how the first Africans came to the Jamestown Colony as indentured servants. Indentured servants are people who have been promised freedom in exchange for work, he pointed out.

“We need to continue to perfection of the American Constitution with economic freedom for all,” added Boden. is a member of the New Jersey Press Association and is a hyperlocal news site that serves residents, organizations and business owners of Denville, New Jersey.
