DENVILLE, NJ – A full moon on Friday the 13th proved to be lucky for Morris Knolls as the team defeated its neighboring rival, Morris Hills, 22-21, at home in the season-opener for the Golden Eagles on Fri., Sept. 13.
Trailing the entire game, Morris Knolls quarterback Nick Parente ran in the tying touchdown, leaving 39 seconds of regulation play. Patrick Sinegra nailed the extra point to give the Golden Eagles a come-from-behind victory.
Morris Knolls’s last drive of the game produced 13 plays, one second-down conversion, two third-down conversions, one fourth-down conversion, complete and incomplete passes, a quarterback sack and quarterback keeps.
“Exciting!”—as best articulated by Morris Knolls Head Coach Bill Regan.
“This is a great buy-in. It’s been a long summer. With this being our first game of the season, compared to Morris Hills, who played last week, we thought we might lose by a couple of touchdowns,” said Regan.
“But we knew if we played hard, we could beat them in the fourth quarter. It was very late in the fourth,” Regan smiled, “but we got it done.”
“The last 24-hours have been mostly getting the team in the right mental frame of mind.” To prepare the team for its first game of the season, Regan and his coaching staff took the players for a hike in the woods to help clear their minds.
“It was a great game against a great team. In the end, it’s all about the character of the kids,” Regan concluded.
The 1-0 Golden Eagles will travel to Randolph on Fri., Sept. 20, for a 7 p.m. start.
