DENVILLE, NJ – Morris Knolls ice hockey, wrestling, and girls and boys basketball participated in holiday tournaments over the weekend.

Boys ice hockey eked out a 4-3 victory in a close game against Ridgewood in the Ice Vault Holiday Classic in Wayne on Fri., Aug. 27. Andrew Ryan scored in the first period, assisted by Derek Coleman. Jason Kwestel (assisted by Gehrig Eckoff and Timmy Kepler) and Eckoff (assisted by Kwestel) netted the puck in the second period to even the score. Kwestel (assisted by Ryan) nailed the go-ahead goal with 2:36 minutes remaining in the game. Elliot Marken had 31 saves. Morris Knolls (4-2-2) will resume tournament play when it faces St. Joseph's Metuchen (6-3) on Mon., Dec. 30, at 6 p.m. at the Ice Vault Arena in Wayne.

The wrestling team had one champion in the Laker Holiday Tournament hosted by Mountain Lakes on Fri., Dec. 27. Ronan Buckingham (182 lbs.) defeated Daniel Malkinski of Pompton Lakes with a 6-4 decision. The Golden Eagles took sixth place with 99 points behind Sparta (124), Pompton Lakes (108), Butler (106), Ridge (105) and Passaic Tech (102). Morris Knolls’s next match is scheduled for Mon., Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. at home against North Warren Regional..

In the Spartan Holiday Tournament, the girls basketball team defeated Villa Walsh, 62-49, to advance to the semifinals. Emily Mitarotonda put up 21 points while Gabby Perna added 18 on Fri., Dec. 27, in Sparta. The team ultimately fell to Warren Hills in the semifinal round, 55-40, with Maddie Knaack scoring 18 points and Mitarotonda getting 11. The 1-3 Lady Eagles will travel to Morristown (2-1) on Fri., Jan., 3, for a 7 p.m. start.

In the Vernon Viking Holiday Tournament, Passaic Valley defeated the Morris Knolls boys basketball team, 56-31, on Fri., Dec. 27. In a closely contested consolation round, the Golden Eagles defeated the hosting team, Vernon, 57-54. Morris Knolls (1-2) will host Mount Olive (1-2) on Fri., Jan. 3, at 7 p.m.
