MORRISTOWN, NJ – Top-seed Morris Knolls ice hockey defeated fifth-seed Jackson Liberty, 8-1, in the quarterfinal round of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament, Public A, on Wed., March 4, at the Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown.
Morris Knolls’s Jason Kwestel earned a hat trick, scoring back-to-back goals in the second period and the third one in the final period. Gehrig Eckoff added two, and James Betz, Jake Quinn and Nick Torres netted one apiece. Nine assists contributed to the offensive effort: two by Jason Moskowitz and one each by Jake DiLoreto, Andrew Ryan, J.D. Florio, Timmy Kepler, Derek Coleman, Gavin Walsh and Kwestel.
Brendan Macauley scored Jackson Liberty’s sole goal in the third period, assisted by Jason Andreyev.
Morris Knolls freshman goalie Elliot Marken had 27 saves, allowing just two goals in three games to sneak pass him in the state tournament to date. Kyle Jones stopped 30 for Jackson Liberty.
The Golden Eagles (17-6-3) will return to Prudential Center in Newark on Mon., March 9, at 4:15 p.m., to defend its state sectional title against second-seed Montclair (18-5-2).
