DENVILLE, NJ – Morris Knolls girls volleyball defeated Morris Catholic, 2-1, at home on Wed., Oct. 2. It took three nail-biting games, however, for the Lady Eagles to get the job done.

Morris Catholic proved to be no pushover, defeating Morris Knolls in the first game, 25-21, and forcing the Golden Eagles, donned in pink shirts to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to dig and dive all over the court to win the second game, 29-27. Morris Knolls eventually settled down and found its stride, taking control of the third game for a 25-18 victory.

As for the team’s sluggish start, Morris Knolls Head Coach Jolyn Veres shared, “This is something we’ve been battling all season – giving up big runs and starting in the hole, which we did in game one.”

“But, in games two and three, we turned it around, didn’t give up the runs and played really hard the entire match,” Veres added. “The things we’ve been working on the entire season came together and finally paid off this afternoon.”

Veres also credited the team’s four senior co-captains for a great deal of the team’s success.

“The seniors are a very cohesive group and share leadership roles. Skye Eppel does a really nice job bringing everyone together in every single play.

“Mary Griffin plays defense and hustles hard.”

“Belle Secallus, our middle, brings a lot of enthusiasm and excitement whenever we get a point.”

Even co-captain Brooke Herman, who suffered a season-ending injury over the summer, has been a very vocal leader for the Lady Eagles, according to Veres.

“She has been offering expertise and advice for the girls throughout the season. She's attended every game and every practice as well,” Veres noted. “She's basically a second assistant coach for me.”

The 5-5 Golden Eagles play Morristown (1-8) next on the road, Thur., Oct. 3, at 4 p.m.
