Baseball: Bears Edge Falcons 1-0 in Pitching Duel

MONROE, NJ - The matchup between the East Brunswick Bears and the Monroe Falcons went the distance but EB scored the go ahead run in the top of the 11th inning. The game was dominated by pitching for both sides as there were only nine total hits the entire game but the Bears were able to pull out a 1-0 victory.

For the Bears it was Senior Tyler Burnham who got the start. Burnham pitched seven strong innings while only allowing three hits and striking out five batters. Burnham had some issues controlling his pitches as he surrendered seven walks but none of them came back to haunt him. Ryan Flynn came into pitch the four extra innings and tallied six strikeouts while only allowing two walks. The Monroe Falcons also had a great start from their pitcher Eric Heatter, who threw 10 ⅔ innings while only allowing four hits and racked up 12 strikeouts.

The Bears could not get much offense going until the top of the seventh inning when Junior David Bermudez hit a leadoff double into left field. With a runner in scoring position it looked like a promising opportunity for EB but the Falcons got out of the jam sitting down three consecutive batters. In the bottom half of the seventh inning the Falcons were threatening to score with bases loaded and 0 outs. On a 1-2 count Burnham forced a ground ball that turned into a double play. Monroe still had runners in scoring position with two outs but Burnham got out of the inning after forcing a fly ball for the third out.

Neither team had any opportunity to score in extra innings until the eleventh inning. Senior Jay Marchese led off the inning by reaching first base off of an error. The next batter was Junior James Schuld who laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to second base. With one out, Junior Brad Edwards hit a ground ball back to the pitcher allowing the pinch runner, Scott Dessel to advance to third base. With two outs and a 1-2 count Dessel scored on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. The Bears were able to hold onto this slim lead in the bottom half of the 11th inning resulting in a 1-0 win over the Monroe Falcons

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
