NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - The East Brunswick Bears were matched up against the Monroe Falcons in the GMC Quarter Finals. The Bears were 2-0 in the regular season against Monroe but both games were extremely close. In this game it was Tyler Burnham on the mound for EB and for Monroe it was Eric Heatter. Last time these two faced off against each other EB pulled out a 1-0 victory in 11 innings but this time things were different. The Falcons’ offense came alive early and the Bears could not claw their way back into it as they lost 7-2 and got bounced out of the tournament.

Senior Tyler Burnham started on the bump for the Bears and the Falcons got to him early. Burnham pitched 5 ⅔ innings while surrendering 11 hits, 5 earned runs and earning himself two strikeouts. Junior Scott Dessel came into relieve Burnham as he threw 1 ⅓ innings, only letting up one hit and striking out one batter.

In the top of the first inning the Monroe Falcons had a runner on second base with two outs. The next batter, the Falcons took a 2-0 lead after a home run to left field by Shawne Eldridge. A few innings later in the top of the third inning, an error followed by a walk allowed the Falcons to have runners on first and second. The next batter hit a RBI single taking a 3-0 lead. The following batter bunted and reached base on another error, which resulted in one more run to cross the plate.

With the Bears trailing 4-0, East Brunswick had a two out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Brad Edwards hit a single and the following batter Junior Brandon Rosenthal reached base off of an error. This was followed by a single by Senior Jay Marchese to load up the bases. On a full count with two outs, Junior James Schuld hit a single to score two runs for the Bears to cut the deficit to only two runs.

Adding insult to injury, with two outs in the top of the sixth inning the Falcons added three more runs thanks to a three run home run to make the score 7-2. The Bears had some opportunities throughout the game to put some runs on the board but they were not able to convert. Falcons pitcher Eric Heatter shut down East Brunswick’s offense, tossing a complete game allowing eight hits and tallying five strikeouts. With this loss, the Bears are eliminated from the GMC tournament.
