Baseball: Bears Hold Off Late Push to Secure Win on Senior Day

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Bears jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Senior Day but a late game comeback from the Piscataway Chiefs made the game a nail-bitter. The day was all about the Seniors and they came to play, A three run last inning for Piscataway was not enough to beat the Bears, as EB came out victorious with a score of 6-5.


On the mound it was Senior Evan Dekhayser who received the start for East Brunswick. Dekhayser earned the win while pitching 4 ⅔ innings allowing two runs and striking out five batters. Junior James Schuld and Senior Ryan Flynn pitched the remainder of the game for the Bears. Schuld did not allow a hit and struck out one batter in 1 ⅓ innings. Flynn allowed three runs with two strikeouts in one inning and secured the win for EB.


In the bottom of the third inning Senior David Paribello drew a one out walk and was able to advance into scoring position as a result of an error. With two outs Junior Brad Edwards hit a line drive into center field allowing Paribello to cross the plate, taking an early 1-0 lead.

The following inning Ryan Flynn led off the inning with a double into left field. The following batter, Junior David Bermudez hit a single putting runners on first and second. On the first pitch of the next at-bat Senior Tyler Burnham hit a double allowing another run to score. Fellow Senior Christian Shelley came up next and he grounded out to second base but it allowed another to reach home. In the top of the fifth inning Piscataway answered back. The Chiefs capitalized on a few crucial walks, which later allowed two runs to score off of a single.

With one out and a runner on second base in the bottom of the fifth inning, Brad Edwards hit a single into left field on an 0-2 count making the score 4-2. Flynn came up to bat next and crushed the next pitch to left field for a home run to take a commanding 6-2 lead. In the top of the seventh inning the Chiefs had their last chance to try to make a comeback. A one out walk followed by a single into center field allowed one run to score cutting the deficit to just three runs. With one final out in the game remaining Piscataway had runners on second and third. The Chiefs hit another single to bring in two more runs making the score 6-5. Ryan Flynn forced the next batter to fly out to third base to close out the game giving the Bears, and more importantly, the Seniors a victory on this special day.
