EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - After defeating Monroe 1-0 a day before, East Brunswick had a chance to secure the Red Division Title. The Bears were matched up against the Falcons again but this time both offenses came alive. EB took an early 5-0 lead but Monroe put together a good comeback effort but it was not enough as the Bears beat the Falcons 6-4.

Junior Michael Falco started on the bump for East Brunswick. Falco threw five innings allowing five hits and four runs while striking out two batters. Fellow Junior Scott Dessel came in for the final two innings without allowing a single hit and striking out three batters.

After three quick outs in the top of the first inning, the Bears bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning. EB totaled three consecutive hits from Senior Ryan Flynn and Juniors Brad Edwards and David Bermudez, which resulted in one run coming across the plate. With one out and runners on second and third, Mike Falco came up to the plate looking to add some more insurance runs. On a 1-2 count Falco ripped a triple into right field extending the Bears’ lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the second inning Brad Edwards hit a single and then stole second base to put himself into scoring position. The next batter was Ryan Flynn who drilled a line drive into center field for a double, allowing Edwards to score another run. A few batters later Senior Tyler Burnham grounded out on a 1-0 count but it was enough to get Ryan Flynn to cross the plate, making the score 5-0.

The Monroe Falcons answered back in the top of the third inning after a walk and a couple of singles Monroe was able to put one run on the board. However, a few innings later the Falcons hit a lead off single that was followed by two doubles allowing two more runs to score. With a runner on third base the Falcons hit a sacrifice fly into right field allowing another run to score, which cut the deficit to just one run.

With a 5-4 lead the Bears were looking to add on a few more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. A lead off single by Senior Jay Marchese was followed by two consecutive outs but pinch runner, Junior Louis Mottola stole second base. An error forced by a ground ball by Brad Edwards allowed for Mottola to score extending their lead to two runs. The Bears were able to hold off the Falcons’ late game comeback resulting in East Brunswick winning their second consecutive GMC Red Division Title. Also, the seedings for the GMC tournament was announced and the Bears received the 3 seed, who will be facing the winner of the Piscataway-Edison game.
