EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - After winning their last few games, the East Brunswick Bears boys’ basketball team went up against the Perth Amboy Panthers. After trading baskets in the first half, the Panthers outperformed the Bears in the second half and pulled out a 52-45 win.
Perth Amboy jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over the Bears. Senior Joe Sampson scored the first basket for the Bears. Sampson later hit a three to score five quick points for East Brunswick. However, at the end of the first quarter the Panthers possessed a 10-7 lead over the Bears.
To start the second quarter, Senior Jesse Perel knocked down a three pointer to tie up the game. Perel had it going his way from downtown as he hit another three pointer with only five minutes remaining in the first half, to take a 13-12 lead. Near the end of the first half, Joe Sampson added a three of his own, giving EB a 20-19 lead going into the second half.
The third quarter was a slow quarter for both teams but the Panthers were able to outscore the Bears 13-12 throughout the quarter. Entering the final quarter, East Brunswick were trailing Perth Amboy 32-31. To begin the final quarter Perth Amboy scored six quick points. The 6-0 run was stopped by a three pointer from Junior Christian Kuan resulting in a 38-34 score. With about two minutes remaining, East Brunswick trailed 45-38 but Perel hit another three. However, this was the closest the Bears would come to taking a lead as a couple free throws for the Panthers allowed them to extend their lead. After trying to claw their way back into the game it wasn’t enough for East Brunswick as they were outscored 33-25 in the second half resulting in a 52-45 loss.
