Congresswoman Watson Coleman Statement on Trump Address to Joint Session of Congress

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman released the following statement in response to President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress:

“Donald Trump is treating the presidency like a reality TV show when the livelihood of the American people is at stake. What millions of American witnessed on cameratonight is window dressing for the divisive proposals championed by President Trump and Republicans in Congress. As he continues to check boxes on promises he has not and cannot deliver, the American people must know they are being led astray.

He called for support of our law enforcement officers, while Republicans in Congress sought to pass two bills that would work against the safety of those very officers and the communities they serve.

He gives lip service to investments in women’s health, but continues to support the dismantling of affordable healthcare and protections that do just that. He claimed to support and the promotion of clean air and clean water but continues to rip up federal environmental protections and dismantles the EPA.

He spoke of access to quality education and the freedom of choice yet looks to divest from public education.

These empty promises backed by policies that go against the very democracy this nation was founded on will continue to put Americans, our economy and this nation is danger. The President’s address was, if nothing else, the true argument for not losing elections.”
