Criminal Activity Nearby Leads to Schools' 'Shelter in Place'

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - Following the report of criminal activity near the Brunswick Square Mall Wednesday afternoon, schools in the area were advised to "shelter in place" until police activity had concluded at the scene.

East Brunswick Schools Superintendent Dr. Victor Valeski sent the following message to parents: "Due to a police investigation in the East Brunswick Square Mall area, EBHS, Hammarskjold, Central, Irwin, and Chitttick Schools will be following a "Shelter in Place" procedure.  Each school's security and EBPD will be monitoring dismissal of students to busses and to parents.  Walkers will be retained."

District parents report that as of 4 p.m., athletics and activities had resumed at EBHS.

The EBPD later issued a statement regarding the incident:  "On 2/8/2017 at 14:56 pm, units responded to the Brunswick Square Mall for an active criminal investigation.  The East Brunswick Police Department put the surrounding schools in a Shelter in Place, which has since been lifted.  There is an active investigation; there are no injuries or an immediate danger to the public at this time.  We will update when more information becomes available."
