The Deutsche Sprachschule, Inc., located in Winfield, New Jersey has provided high-quality, affordable instruction in German language and culture for over 80 years.
In 1934, members of Newark’s Emanuel Methodist Church, recognizing that unless German instruction were available, the language and customs of the country of their ancestors would soon be lost to the younger generation, agreed to establish a Sunday School that would provide German language instruction. Home to New Jersey’s largest German-American community, Newark had always enjoyed a robust tradition of German culture centered around the church, sports and social clubs, and singing societies. Classes began in January 1935 with 15 students and Gottfried Schwing, one of its founders, as the first president. So rapid was the school’s growth that in 1939 it moved into new quarters at Montgomery Hall, Irvington.
The outbreak of World War II presented the Deutsche Sprachschule with a cruel dilemma – to close its doors and to begin its work again only when conditions were appropriate. It would be almost nine years before Montgomery Hall once again resounded to the voices of youngsters studying the German language.
On 14 August 1952, the school was officially incorporated as a non-profit association whose objectives were “to engage in, assist and contribute to the education of students interested in German language and culture.”
Enrollment rose to 290 students – an all-time high – during the 1968-70 school years, with many on a waiting list. By the mid-1960s the Deutsche Sprachschule was acknowledged as one of the nation’s best German language schools.
In 2000, the school installed its first computers, paving the way for today’s fully-equipped computer lab.
In 2002, the school moved to its fifth home and current location, Winfield School in Winfield Park. A year later, its first website was up and running, soon to prove itself a vital link between school members, the administration and the public.
Today, the school provides language instruction to over 100 students; children from Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade, as well as adults in German I-III. Classes are held on Saturdays from 9:15 to 12:15 am and the school year runs from 12 September 2015 through 14 May 2016. All classes feature experienced teachers, many of whom have been teaching the German language for many years. Class size is kept small to allow for individualized attention and maximum interaction.
In all of our elementary programs, our school emphasizes active learning, utilizing creative projects and age appropriate arts and crafts. The speaking, reading, and writing of basic German vocabulary and sentence structure is taught, giving students practical, usable skills which they can apply in real world situations. Other focuses include listening comprehension and student presentations. Our curriculum is supported by both music and computer classes.
At the higher grade levels we focus on a refinement of the pupil's skills to encourage proper grammatical construction. We use a variety of standardized tests to evaluate the progress that our students are making in comparison to other German students nationwide. Our school administers the following examinations: Association of American Teachers of German (AATG) Levels II, III, and IV and Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD) Levels A1, A2, DSD I and DSD II. Our school also offers Advanced Placement (AP) German Language exam preparation.
