EDISON, NJ - - State Senator Patrick Diegnan and Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak believe our state has a sacred covenant with our veterans – that just as they served to protect us, we have a moral obligation to take care of them and their families when they come home. Working in the legislature to uphold that covenant has been one of their most solemn responsibilities as elected officials.

"We must never forget the sacrifices that our fighting men and women make on the front lines to protect our freedoms," said Diegnan (D-Middlesex). "When we introduced legislation to increase property tax exemptions for disabled and returning veterans and expand the preference for peacetime veterans in civil service, we were showing reverence for their service and making an effort to ensure that their livelihood is secure."

The legislators, who are candidates for re-election this November have made honoring our veterans a top priority of their joint campaign. They recently supported a piece of bipartisan legislation that would give New Jersey veterans and surviving spouses priority status when applying for affordable public housing.

“Men and women who were willing to give their lives for this nation shouldn't feel like their elected officials are ignoring their basic needs," said Assemblyman Karabinchak (D-Middlesex). "By making public housing more accessible to veterans in New Jersey, our state can follow the model developed in Middlesex County and act on its obligation to ensure that no veteran returns from their service only to become homeless."

Additionally, Senator Diegnan and Assemblyman Karabinchak have recently supported legislation to ensure that veterans on Medicaid and living in a facility, such as a nursing home or developmental center, have their transportation needs met when they need to visit doctor's offices or go for necessary medical testing.
