EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ -  Just before Christmas last year, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie visited the East Brunswick Walgreens to support the national chain's anti-opiate initiative Project Medicine Drop. As a sign of the ongoing problems caused by opiate addiction, an armed robbery of prescription medications occurred at the same East Brunswick location this morning.

On October 25, 2017 at approximately 1:41 am, East Brunswick Police patrol units responded to Walgreens at 421 Ryders Lane on the report of a shoplifting, according to a report issued by the East Brunswick Police Department this afternoon. This Walgreens is open 24 hours a day.

Investigation revealed that two males, one a light-skinned Hispanic or black male, the other, a black or Hispanic male with a beard, entered the store with the light-skinned male walking towards the pharmacy counter.

Once at the counter, the male lifted his sweatshirt revealing the handle of a handgun to the pharmacist and demanded prescription medicine.  The pharmacist handed over a number of pills, and the men exited the store in an unknown direction.

The investigation is continuing.

Anyone with any information regarding is asked to contact the East Brunswick Investigative Division at 732-390-6990.  Information can also be sent to the Confidential Tips Line at 732-432-8477 or tips@ebpd.net.

John Colaizzi is the Area Healthcare Specialist for Walgreens, which launched its national anti-opiate initiative  at the first location in New Jersey in East Brunswick where Colaizzi worked when he was a student at EBHS. He joined Governor Christie at the location last year to promote Walgreen's forward move to make drug returns easier.  The program includes a prescription drop-off kiosk at the rear of the store near the pharmacy; increased availability of nalaxone (Narcan) without a prescription; full compliance with online monitoring of opiate prescriptions; and pharmacist counseling  those who feel that they may be having trouble with prescriptions, including possible addiction.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.
