EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - The East Brunswick varsity baseball team will open the 2017 season this weekend as the defending Greater Middlesex Conference champion and the favorites in the GMC's Red Division.
The most prominent returning figure is senior left-hander Tyler Burnham, who is not only one of the top pitchers in New Jersey, but one of the state's most complete all-around players. Burnham had a 9-1 record with a 1.91 earned-run average as a junior, and he also delivered the game-winning hit when the Bears won the conference championship. He batted .398 with 24 RBI and has signed a letter of intent to attend Seton Hall University.
Shortstop David Bermudez impressed as a sophomore last season, when he manned third base and batted close to .350. Senior catcher Jay Marchese and center fielder Ryan Flynn are experienced hands upon which veteran head coach Chris Kenney can count to help spearhead the Bears' offense. Senior right-hander Mike Falco is slated to work as the second starter in the pitching rotation.
East Brunswick was also fortified by a strong junior varsity team last year, so reinforcements should be ably manning positions vacated by graduation on this year's varsity.
