EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Battle Of Route 18 proved not to be much of a battle this year. In a game that pretty much typified their season, the Bears of East Brunswick High School were defeated by Old Bridge High School by a final score of 35-6.
The game, played on Thanksgiving morning, was close early. Old Bridge quarterback Nick LaVecchia scored on a first-quarter touchdown run, only to have the Bears answer on a touchdown run by Jon Gearhartz later in the quarter. After the extra-point attempt failed, the quarter ended with Old Bridge holding the narrow 7-6 lead.
From the second quarter on however, Old Bridge physically controlled the game on both sides, scoring twice in the second quarter to take a 21-6 halftime lead. The third quarter proved more of the same, as Cameron Hutchins scored his second touchdown of the game, and then Old Bridge intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, boosting the lead to 35-6. Old Bridge then dominated the remainder of the game on the ground and essentially running out the clock. As was the case in most games this season, the size difference proved to much to overcome, as Old Bridge ran the football for nearly 300 yards in controlling the game and the clock.
The season comes to an end for the Bears at a disappointing 1-9 record, and hopes that Coach Molnar can continue the rebuilding process next season.
