East Brunswick: Route 18 Crash Leads to Passenger Fatality


EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ -  An early-morning crash last Friday led to the fatality of a front seat passenger when two vehicles collided at the intersection of Route 18 and Rues Lane near the Brunswick Square Mall.

 At approximately 5:58 AM, Laura Young (37) of Old Bridge was driving a 2007 Honda Accord on Route 18 North near the intersection of Rues Lane. Ruth Asmat (57) of East Brunswick was operating a 2005 Nissan Altima and traveling east on Rues Lane. Front seat passenger John Asmat was also in the vehicle.

Both vehicles collided while proceeding through the intersection.  John Asmat (40) of Staten Island was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for serious injuries sustained in the crash. Asmat was pronounced dead today as a result of those injuries, according to a report issued by the East Brunswick Police Department.

Ruth Asmat was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for moderate but non life-threatening injuries caused by the accident. Laura Young was not injured.

     The crash is currently under investigation by the East Brunswick Police Department Special Operations Section. Anyone with information regarding the investigation is asked to contact Ptl.
