EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - It was the Bears by a run. Again.
The East Brunswick softball team continued its streak of one-run victories with a 3-2 triumph over Hightstown in the championship game of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 tournament on Friday.
All four of East Brunswick's state tournament victories so far have been by a single run. On Friday, the Bears needed to rally from a 2-1 deficit in their final at-bat.
Kaleigh Dwyer allowed two runs, but neither one earned, and gave up seven hits in seven innings to gain then victory. She struck out seven batters and walked two.
Samantha Smalley doubled in a run and Ashli Venokur and Allie Warren each delivered run-scoring singles for East Brunswick (22-6), which scored a run in the first before getting shut out over its next five innings. Hightstown (17-7) scored both its runs in the top of the sixth.
East Brunswick moves on to the overall Group 4 state semifinal round next Tuesday against either Egg Harbor or Eastern Regional at a site to be announced.
