EAST BRUNSWICK - Fall Freecycling Day is slated for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, at Crystal Springs Aquatic Center on Dunham’s Corner Road, offering area residents an environmentally friendly way to discard serviceable household items and also scout for “finds” they can use.

Items may be dropped off for freecycling at the Crystal Springs parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with browsing and pickup until 2 p.m. Usable items must be offered for free. In the event of rain, check the Friends’ website for updates: friendsebec.com.

Held in spring and fall, Freecycling events are sponsored by the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission.  Freecycling Days aim to keep unwanted household items out of landfills and provide a chance to find serviceable items and unusual finds. There is no charge to participate in this “free trade” event, which also attracts small theater groups looking for props and costumes, and craftspeople seeking items for projects.

Freecycling is a community event intended for people to exchange usable items for personal use, not for re-sale.

Recommended freecycling items include clothing, shoes, bicycles, fish tanks, dishes, pots and pans, toys, silverware, small appliances, tools, power tools, kitchen items, garage items, electronics and pet supplies. Large furniture pieces will not be accepted. It is recommended that boxed toys, games and anything with small parts be taped shut.

Prohibited items include mattresses, televisions, computer monitors, paints, VHS tapes, computer disks, pesticides, tires, toiletries, unframed mirrors, food or any hazardous materials.

The Friends of EBEC reserves the right to reject items.

Volunteers are still needed to help staff the event. Information can be found at friendsebec.com/freecycling.htm

Clothing, shoes and toys left at the end of the day will be picked up by Fashion Republic, which distributes them for reuse elsewhere. Other items left at the end of the day, along with unusable and broken items, will be recycled.

East Brunswick Freecycling Days also are sponsored by the East Brunswick Recycling Center.

The Friends of EBEC is a nonprofit citizens group dedicated to local environmental education and conservation. In addition to Freecycling Days, the Friends sponsors National Moth Week, Amphibian Protection, Community Garden, Butterfly Park, Moth Nights and events that help to educate the public about the environment and sustainable practices. Membership is free.
