EAST BRUNSWICK, NJDon’t let the dog days of summer get you down! East Brunswick Public Library (2 Jean Walling Civic Center) hosts two great children’s programs this August.

“Magic” Jim Vagias and his trusty sidekick puppet Mortimer are featured at a morning magic show on Saturday, August 13 at 10:30 am. This special performance combines magic, humor, puppetry and lots of audience participation.

Vagias is both a former teacher and theatrical producer. He has performed on television and on stage in the United States and Europe. Through his company Educational Productions, his family friendly stage show has been seen by over 500,000 children.

The library also features “The Spoon Man” Jim Cruise on Thursday, August 18 at 6:30 pm. He creates “clackety clack” music with spoons, something he has done for over 32 years. This interactive family program mixes music and comedy.

Cruise is an accomplished spoon musician, performing nationwide. One of the highlights of his career was being the first American spoon player to ever perform in Russia in 1986.

Both programs are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, and free tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before the program begins. The programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The Queen of the Big Time by Adriana Trigiani (Ballentine Books, 2005)

The Queen of the Big Time by Adriana Trigiani, a New York Times best selling author, was recommended to me by a young woman who actually came from the town of Roseto, Pennsylvania, the place where the novel is set. “The author did such a wonderful job of describing how the town actually is,” said the young lady.
