SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Police in two Middlesex County towns are considering the possibility that break ins at two storage businesses, impacting almost 100 units, are related, officials said Thursday.

Some 43 storage units at the Public Storage location on Route 1 in South Brunswick and another 50 units at the J&M Self Storage facility on Oak Tree Road in Edison were broken into during the overnight hours of Jan. 11, according to officials.

“Given the similarities and timeframe, of course we are examining any potential connections between these incidents, and working cooperatively with South Brunswick,” said Capt. Anthony Marcantuono, head of Edison’s Special Operations Group said in a press release Thursday.

At 8:20am a customer arrived at the South Brunswick facility and observed the front gate open and windows to the main office damaged, according to South Brunswick police.

Officers went through the facility and discovered 43 storage units had been broken into.

Police said the suspect(s) cut the locks or bars off each of the storage units to gain entry.

The owners of Public Storage contacted unit owners to try and determine if anything was removed from the units, police said.

In Edison, the owners of J&M Self Storage, on Oak Tree Road, told Edison police Officer Dmitri Smolkin that burglars broke into more than 50 storage units in two buildings on the premises, prying open locks on each unit in an overnight burglary that was discovered on the morning of Wednesday, police in that town said.

“Crimes involving theft of people’s personal property are reprehensible. Our department takes these crimes very seriously,” Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan said. “I am confident our detectives are handling this case thoroughly and diligently.”

Anyone with information is asked to call South Brunswick Police at (732) 329-4646, or Edison police Detective Nick Puccio at (732) 248-7535.
