South Brunswick Police: The Bears Are Back In Town

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – It’s that time of year again. Bear sightings are starting to come in, police said Thursday.

According to police, the improving weather and season is drawing black bears back to the township after a long winter’s nap.

A black bear was reported in the vicinity of George’s Road and Viking Way during the past week.

Video footage shows the bruin meandering in a driveway at night before taking off into the woods.

Capt. Jim Ryan said the bear was probably going through garbage looking for food.

Several bears have been spotted in South Brunswick in recent years, coming from the more wooded northern part of the state.

“It is important to understand that black bears reside in all 21 counties of New Jersey.  Most bears avoid human contact and live in wooded areas away from residential neighborhoods,” Ryan said in an alert to residents on Thursday. “Within our community, most bear sightings are while they are moving from one area to another through natural wooded corridors.  So if you see a bear in South Brunswick, it’s usually one bear moving through the wooded areas between neighborhoods.”

Police remind residents:

•Never Feed the bears

•Never instigate the bears by cornering them or throwing objects at them.

•Cover garbage cans with a secure lid

•Avoid bird feeders during bear season

•Immediately remove all uneaten food and food bowls used by pets fed outdoors.

•If you encounter a bear remain calm and do not run. Make sure the bear has an escape route.

•Avoid direct eye contact and back up slowly

To report a nuisance black bear, call the DEP's 24-hour, toll-free hotline: 1-877-WARN DEP (1-877-927-6337).

 Call 911 if:

•There is an immediate threat to humans

•The bear is a nuisance

•The bear attacks a pet

DO NOT call 911 if:

The bear is not presenting an immediate danger to humans, pets, or property, police said.

If unsure about whether police response is necessary, call the South Brunswick Police Department’s non-emergency phone number, 732-329-4646.

For any additional information or questions call the South Brunswick Police Department’s Officer George Vit at 732-329-4000 Ext. 4460.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
