EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - Ten East Brunswick High School students have qualified as semi-finalists in the prestigious National Merit Scholar Program. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)—which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.
The students who have qualified as semi-finalists have met a rigorous standard of achievement already. Winners of National Merit Scholarships will be announced in the spring of 2019. A committee of experienced college administration officials will meet to choose the finalists who will each receive $2,500 towards their college tuition. Finalist status is based on a student's academic record; the recommendation of his/her school; a student essay; involvement in extracurricular activities and scores on the PSAT/NMSQT.
