EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - A local man has been charged with several counts that include robbery, theft, assault, and fraud with most incidents having taken place at the north end of East Brunswick along Route 18.
On July 21, 2018 at approximately 2:00 pm patrol units responded to the area of Myron Place and Manor Place for the report of a robbery. It was reported by witnesses the suspect had attempted to steal the victim’s wallet out of his rear pocket as he was walking on Myron Place. The suspect struck the victim in the head with an open hand, knocking him to the ground where the victim hit his head and lost consciousness, according to a report issued by the East Brunswick Police Department.
The suspect then fled on foot toward Westons Mills Road and Highway 18. Further investigation revealed the victim indeed had his wallet, which contained credit cards and approximately $100, ripped from his pants pocket during the incident. The victim indicated that he saw a tall skinny black male wearing a red shirt walking in the area prior to the assault. A search of the area was negative for the suspect. The victim was transported to Robert Wood Johnson after sustaining injuries to his head, neck and extremities.
On July 23, 2018 at approximately 1:00pm, patrol units were dispatched to the area of Highway 18 and Naricon Place for a suspicious person. Dispatch advised that the caller reported seeing the suspect from the Robbery on July 21 and that the suspect was in the area on foot.
Upon arrival, officers checking the area located the individual walking northbound on the southbound side of Highway 18. As officers approached the suspect, later identified as Latrell A. Edwards, 18 of East Brunswick, he began running southbound on Highway 18 South and suddenly jumped over the concrete median, continuing to run southbound on Highway 18 in the northbound lanes.
Edwards continued to run in the center lane into oncoming traffic before he ran into the wooded area that divides Highway 18 northbound and the Route 1 southbound ramp onto Highway 18 northbound. Edwards was then seen running across the Route 1 ramp and entering The Gardens at Raritan apartment complex on Paulus Boulevard in New Brunswick.
Edwards ran into the parking lot of the Starbucks and Famous Dave's in New Brunswick, NJ (23 US Highway 1, New Brunswick, NJ 08901) where he was taken into custody. Edwards was transported to the East Brunswick Police Department where he was interviewed by members of the Investigative Division.
At headquarters, Edwards admitted to committing the Robbery on July 21 and was charged with Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Theft, and Credit Card Fraud. Additionally, Edwards admitted to the following and was charged:
On January 27, he stole a school bus located at Shoppers World in Loehmann’s Plaza parking lot. He was charged with theft of a motor vehicle.
On February 2, a purse snatching from a woman walking by Hong Kong Supermarket, 265 Highway 18 East Brunswick. He was charged with theft.
On May 28, he assaulted a man walking on Rennee Road near Retro Fitness in Loehmann’s Plaza by sneaking up behind him and punching him in the head. He was charged with simple assault.
On July 18, after burglarizing a motor vehicle on Lake Avenue in East Brunswick where he took keys located inside the vehicle and stole another vehicle, he was charged with burglary and theft of motor vehicle.
Edwards also admitted to a robbery of a taxi cab driver in New Brunswick.
The accused has been remanded to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center in North Brunswick.
